WHAT IS BELOW POVERTY LINE (BPL)?

Below Poverty Line (BPL) is a term used to describe the economic status of individuals or households who are unable to afford basic necessities of life.

In India, BPL is determined by the Planning Commission of India based on the income and consumption patterns of households.

The poverty line is revised periodically to account for inflation and changes in the cost of living.

Individuals or households falling below the poverty line are eligible for various government schemes and subsidies.

Some of the schemes include the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and the National Food Security Act (NFSA).

The government also provides BPL families with access to healthcare, education, and other basic amenities.

Despite government efforts, poverty remains a major issue in India, with a large percentage of the population still living below the poverty line.
