Understanding Income Tax Assessees and Their Classifications

Definition: An income tax assessee, as per the Income Tax Act, 1961, is any individual or entity obligated to pay taxes on earned income or incurred losses within a single assessment year.

Person under Income Tax Act: Defined under section 2(31), it includes natural and artificial entities like individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, firms, companies, associations, local authorities, and artificial juridical persons.

Types of Assessees: Normal Assessee: Obligated to pay taxes, interest, penalties, or receive refunds. Representative Assessee: Pays taxes on behalf of non-residents, minors, or incapacitated individuals.

Deemed Assessee: Legally obliged to pay taxes, including those undergoing assessment or refunds. Assessee-in-Default: Fails to fulfill statutory tax payment obligations, resulting in default.
