What is Rectification Request u/s 154?

Introduction: The Income Tax Department reviews filed ITRs and issues intimation under section 143(1). If discrepancies are found, taxpayers can rectify errors under section 154 of the Income Tax Act. Authority to Rectify: Both taxpayers and Assessing Officers can correct errors in ITRs. Rectification can be initiated within four years from the end of the relevant financial year.

Prerequisites for Rectification: Registered Taxpayers: Must be registered on the e-Filing portal with a valid user ID and password. Receipt of Intimation: Must have received intimation under section 143(1) or section 16(1) of the Wealth Tax Act. ERI Users: Ensure active ERI status and add clients using the Add Client service. Authentication: Use a valid Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC).

Classification of Rectification Requests: Income Tax Rectification: Correct details not considered by CPC, fix tax credit mismatches, add information for 234C interest, correct status or exemption section errors, and update return data (offline/online). Wealth Tax Rectification: Reprocess correct details not considered, resolve tax credit mismatches, and correct return data via XML upload.

Steps to File Rectification Online: Login: Access your e-filing account using your user ID and password. Rectification Option: Click on e-File > Rectification from the dashboard. New Request: Generate a new request and enter the required details including PAN and assessment year. Intimation Reference Number: If selecting Wealth Tax, enter the latest intimation reference number and click Continue. View Rectification Status: Login: Log in to the e-Filing portal. Check Status: Click on Services > Rectification Request > Rectification Status. Details: View rectification details based on the Request Type and select Take Action or View Details against the Rectification Reference Number.
